Meditation is a method in which a person employs a psychological technique called mindfulness, a set of cognitive and emotional practices, to train focus and awareness, both to attain a more mentally relaxed and psychologically clear state and to develop a more positive outlook in life. Mindfulness is said to be the first state of meditation, occurring without distraction. It is said that as you relax and quiet your mind, it becomes more awake and alert to the world around you. This type of meditation is sometimes used as a short retreat, lasting only a few hours, or in between longer practices such as yoga.
