Fly Tipping In Lockdown Reaches Record Highs

The increase in rubbish being dumped did not go unnoticed, but is it all down to more incidents or more reports? The government said that at least some of the increase in incidents in the country last year was down to more accurate recording.

In order to answer this question, researchers gathered together all of the social media tweets from 2019 and 2020 to analyse them. They compared 2020 with 2018 and 2019 to see what the impact of reporting may have on fly-tipping incidents. This data was compared to the number of incidents reported to authorities to estimate the correct figure, as well as the value of fines that would have been generated.
