Weight loss can be caused by a reduction in body fat, muscle tissue, or water weight. Other causes of weight loss are, however, more likely to be associated with cancer, gastrointestinal infection (like bacterial vaginosis or hepatitis), viral infection (including HPV or HIV), heart disease, parasitic infection, heart failure, and psychiatric disorders. The disorder known as bulimia causes an excess of weight loss through vomiting and the frequent purging of bodily fluids. This disorder is relatively common, affecting one to two percent of the population.

Many people have unrealistic expectations regarding rapid weight loss. Rapid weight loss is not the same as rapid weight gain. Excessive intake of fluids often leads to feelings of hunger which leads to decreased caloric intake. This leads to an increase in body weight.
